Welcome to ishush
ishush is a self-directed online resource all about hyperacusis. It provides you with comprehensive and reliable information about hyperacusis and sound, the impact it can have on daily life, and helpful ways to manage hyperacusis. You can use it at your own pace and revisit it as often as you need.
Introduction
Some people respond differently to everyday sounds such as car noise, dishwashers, or other people talking. They find everyday sounds to be intense, overwhelming, loud and even painful. This is a hearing problem called hyperacusis. For people who experience hyperacusis, every aspect of life, work, education, and spending time with family and friends can be affected.
It is important that people who experience hyperacusis and those who care for them have a good knowledge of the condition and how best to manage it.
People experiencing hyperacusis have told us that information and support is essential to managing hyperacusis and that it should be immediately available when first experiencing hyperacusis. They told us that learning about hyperacusis, what it is, why it occurs, who experiences it, what makes it worse and that they are not alone helped them to take part in daily activities and manage their hyperacusis.
The ishush programme will:
- Help you to better understand hyperacusis
- Provide you with a set of strategies to manage your hyperacusis
These strategies will help you to:
- Be more aware of your thoughts and how they influence your experiences
- Think about your environment, what you can adjust and change about your
relationship with sound - Practice relaxation skills
If you have recently started experiencing hyperacusis, or have experienced it for a while, and would like to gain more understanding, and try some helpful ways to manage it, then this programme may help you.
